LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR CUSTOMERS FROM VARIOUS INDUSTRIES

Transportation

Mender provides secure, risk tolerant and efficient OTA firmware and software updates for various applications in transportation industry, including both the vehicle itself as well as charging stations.

Transportation including vehicles and charging stations

What our customers in
transportation have to say about Mender?
“A key thing with Mender is the Delta Updates. The image we are sending to the lorry ICU devices are 200 to 300 mbytes in size, and over a cellular network, this would be very slow over cellular and cost a fortune without having the ability to use deltas to reduce the file updates size.”
Jonathan Wilkinson, Principal, iBee Technical Services
“We need a high degree of central control both to enable the devices correctly but also to troubleshoot quickly from a distance if something goes wrong. We are using secure and robust OTA remote software updates from Mender to help customers maintain control of their edge devices, perform condition monitoring of cargo-handling equipment, and keep their operations sailing smoothly”
Joerg Peschke, Director, Drives and Controls, MacGregor Group

Use cases for Mender in Transportation

Robust and secure OTA software updates for gateways, MCUs and ECUs in:

  • EV buses and EV scooters and their charging stations; and in-vehicle infotainment systems in applications such as ride sharing or carpooling services.
  • Cab radios in trains which are being upgraded to next generation infrastructure. The software updates need to be delivered frequently via cellular connectivity including FRMCS and LTE-R. Mender handles root file system and firmware updates to these cab radios.
  • Lorries where tyre pressure and temperature are monitored. Data analyzed on the edge helps transport companies to optimize maintenance, reduce service costs and the time when vehicles are off the road due to servicing.
  • Machinery in shipping vessels where bandwidth is limited and connectivity is constrained. Mender uses delta updates to reduce bandwidth consumption by over 90%. Automatic update retries are important as devices can become disconnected during an update and will need to resume the update at a later stage.
  • On-board infotainment systems on commercial aircraft. The updates must be deployed with artifact download resumption capabilities according to a schedule of when the craft is on the ground. Security and product feature extensibility is also required.
  • Other sensitive in-flight connected equipment such as electronic flight bags.
  • Radar systems and other mission critical systems on military ships, with the option of hosting an OTA software updates server on-premise.
